Good afternoon Alcott School Community,
I would like to thank all the families who have taken our Annual Needs Assessment Survey. Your voice continues to be the single most important aspect of my work as we strive to address our school community’s needs. The survey is still available on the website. As of today, we have 91 responses.
One of the topics that we discussed at last night’s Town Hall meeting was the need for more in person meetings. I couldn’t agree more; however, COVID protocols still require us to follow the district and county recommendations. There was a suggestion that came up last night around having a “coffee with the principal” in front of the school immediately after morning drop-off. Great idea and we are going to make this happen. Next Tuesday, I am inviting all families to join me in front of the school at 8:15 for a cup of coffee. I will be able to discuss some of our goals and hear from you regarding your needs and requests.
Join me this Tuesday, February 8th at 8:15 for coffee and discussion.
The importance of Black History Month. The purpose of Black History Month began in 1926, by Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson who organized National Negro History Weekto promote and celebrate the achievements of Black Americans, which has grown into today's "Black History Month." It was a move designed, then and now, to counter negative and racist stereotypes ingrained in American culture.
The month is intended to recognize the contribution and achievements of those with African or Caribbean heritage. It's also an opportunity for people to learn more about the effects of racism and how to challenge negative stereotypes. Our staff is engaged in this significant goal and your students will be discussing and learning about why this month’s focus is valuable.
PTA NEWS: Your Alcott PTA will be selling Sweetheart Grams Starting Monday, February 7th through Friday, February 11th, and of course again on Monday, February 14th. This week’s FWOW (Feeling Word of the Week) is HOPEFUL. Be sure to use this word with your children at home, during dinner time conversations, and at family time. Our classroom teachers will be engaging students in what it means to be hopeful. This is a nice word that fits well during this Black History Month Celebration.
Pizza with the Principal next week will be celebrating 9 Leaders and Scholars from Ms. Graham, Ms. Summers, and Ms. Brakespear’s classrooms. Students will be selected by teachers for demonstrating what it means to be a bucket filler at Alcott.
Lost and Found: Oh MY! There are several items that have gone unclaimed over the past weeks and the smell is “something else”. You know the process. All items will be placed in a bag with today’s date listed. All items not accounted for after 14 days, will be donated. If you lost an item, let the office know and I will be happy to direct you to the “big black bag”.
Have a great weekend.
Principal Lewis
