3/12/21 Friday Update

Good afternoon Alcott School Community,
We have completed another productive week here at school as we prepare for our target date re-opening scheduled for April 12.  I would like to provide you with some news and updates concerning our school.  On behalf of our entire school staff, I want to thank you again for your patience as we receive new and relevant information.
  • This week I had the pleasure of recommending Maria Pulido as our Alcott Classified Employee of the year.  Ms. Pulido joins Ms. Morgan (Certificated Employee of the Year) as our two Employees of the Year.  Both will be honored at the District level in May.   This is a special honor and means a great deal to me because each recipient was elected by their peers.
    • Be sure to visit our website for pictures of our two fantastic employees.
  • Recent events have made it clear—we need greater equity and harmony in our society. In a time of injustice and racial division, we need solutions to bridge the achievement gap and promote greater racial harmony in our schools.  This will be one of my top priorities in supporting our entire staff here at Alcott.
  • Our PTA needs you.  Our PTA assists with $100 mini-grants for all our teachers, fieldtrips, classroom projects, fundraising and so much more; however, without members, they will be unable to continue, which would be a huge loss to our students, staff, and school community.  Membership is open to all family members who have children and grandchildren at Alcott in any of our programs (Infant-Toddler through 5th grade).  We need our Alcott PTA and I hope you are able to join online today @ https://jointotem.com/ca/san-diego/louisa-may-alcott-pta.
  • Over 18,000 Educators Vaccinated!  (8,000 in the past week) We are getting there!  This is one of the key factors that must be met for us to reach our April 12 target date.
  • SDEA BARGAINING UPDATE
  • The district is actively bargaining the instructional model proposals, the possible impacts, and the health and safety guidelines.
  • Once we have reached a tentative agreement, I will communicate with our stakeholders about the particulars of the models to best support our preparation for Phase 2 reopening.
  • FAMILY PREFERENCE SURVEY UPDATE:
    • I am eager to review the results next week and will share with you soon after.  Thank you for taking the survey and ensuring your voice is heard in this process.
  • SUMMER PROGRAMS
    • At this week’s Board meeting, the Board approved a variety of summer programs for all grade levels.
    • CLICK HERE for a general overview.
      • Curriculum will be developed centrally.
      • Enrollment procedures and program locations will be shared next week.
I am focused on working closely with our staff to ensure we are ready for students to return to campus.  Our focus will be geared to aligning the conditions necessary to address the well-being of our students and staff as we transition back after far too many months in our homes and in distance learning.  We understand the anxieties that have faced our kids and families and are looking forward to creating the culture necessary that embraces our school community in a true "Alcott Owl Way"

Enjoy your weekend.
