3/4/22 Friday Update

Good afternoon Alcott School Community,
It has been a wonderful week at Alcott Elementary School and I am pleased to report that our Alcott Owls are learning and engaged in some amazing lessons and activities.  We celebrated Dr. Seuss Day on Wednesday and it was a fun day (check out our website and our twitter link for pictures).
This week’s FWOW (Feeling Word of the Week) is GRATEFUL.  Be sure to use this word with your children at home, during dinner time conversations, and at family time.  Our classroom teachers will be engaging students in what it means to be GRATEFUL and how this emotion can benefit us.
Pizza with the Principal next week we will be celebrating 9 Leaders and Scholars from Ms. Payton, Ms. Beane, Ms. Bennett (3 per class = 9 total will join me).  Students will be selected by teachers for demonstrating what it means to be a bucket filler at Alcott.  Be Kind:  Be a Bucket Filler!
Creating a positive classroom culture:  Our continued efforts and vision for Alcott are aligned to creating the conditions for learning that empower kids, create safe places for our youth, and empower students and staff to be their best “self”.  My weekly classroom walkthrough focus is aligned to this goal for your children.
Area Superintendent Classroom Observations/walkthroughs:  This week I will be touring our Area Superintendent through our classrooms to highlight our efforts.  I am proud of our team and look forward to showcasing our staff.
CALIFORNIA HEALTHY KIDS SURVEY:  All parents in California Public Schools are asked to take the attached survey each year to assist school counselors in servicing students’ needs.  Please open this link and ensure your voice is heard!
Women’s History Month:  March is our chance to engage students in lessons that focus on the contributions women have made in our country, world, and community.  Let’s ensure our students value the efforts of Women!
UPDATE ON MASK GUIDANCE
  • Governor Gavin Newsom announced masks will no longer be required – but will be strongly recommended – in schools after March 11. The Governor further noted districts may continue to exercise local control by continuing to require masks when local conditions warrant precaution.
  • San Diego County remains in the high COVID-19 community level, as defined by the latest CDC tool. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) continues to recommend indoor masking for schools in areas where the COVID-19 community level is high. Therefore, San Diego Unified will exercise its local control to maintain the indoor mask mandate at this time.
  • The District will conduct an assessment, including the recommendations of public health agencies and UC San Diego experts, to decide the metrics and thresholds that will be used to determine indoor masking after San Diego County exits the high COVID-19 community level. The District will announce this data-driven and science-based ‘off-ramp’ strategy before March 11.
KUDOS to our very own lead custodian, Mr. Austria, who was selected by his peers as this year’s Classified Employee of the Year.  Mr. Austria will be recognized at a SDUSD Board meeting.
SDSU Senior Interns:  I am excited to announce that we have formed a special partnership with SDSU and next week we will have 7 College seniors assisting staff in our infant-elementary classrooms.  These future educators will be working with teachers, and other specialists (speech, counseling, psychology, OT, PT, and more).  As you have heard me many times, I aim to bring more positive adult influence to this school and create the best school culture possible for our families, staff and students.
Our PTA needs your support:  we are looking for volunteers for the upcoming book fair.  Sign-up using this link. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0F44A9A62AAAF9C52-book
PICTURE DAY:  Monday and Tuesday.  refer to the flyers that were sent home with all students.  SMILE!
Enjoy your weekend.
Relax, Be Kind, Be a Bucket Filler!
